Personal Philosophy of Nursing Education Paper Description

How an educator teaches is based on a personal philosophy of teaching.  The philosophy informs the teacher’s view of the learner, learning, instruction, and evaluation.  An educator’s behavior in the classroom is based on a personal teaching philosophy.
The student will write a paper which describes a personal philosophy of nursing education.  The paper should describe one’s personal feelings about teaching and learning.
1) What is your view of teaching?  How does one define learning, learning, and instruction? What is the educator’s role in the classroom?  How do you foster the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to transition nursing students to nurses?
2) What do you value as important for students to learn?  For example, is it psychomotor skills, leadership, critical thinking, or values such as caring?  Explain the rationale.  Will this change if you are teaching in a BSN, ADN, or diploma nursing degree program?  Why or why not?
3) What teaching methods will you use?  Why are these methods the best for achieving the educational outcomes you are trying to achieve? What methods will you use to effectively teach special populations such as Gen X, Gen Y, older students, and students who speak English as a second language?
4) What is the justification for the way you will teach? What are the theoretical underpinnings for your philosophy? Relate your personal philosophy to one learning theory and to two NLN core competencies (in GOML/D2L).
5) Identify two goals to work toward while in the MSN program to establish oneself as an effective nurse educator.

Note:  More than one theory may be used, but is not required.  Please limit to two theories).  Instructors will review a draft of the paper for feedback.

A Turnitin Originality Report will also be provided with the paper.  Please see the Turnitin instructions under ‘Grading Rubrics’ folder for details on generating the report.
