The “At-Risk Tree” metaphor offers the image of “the gardener” to describe the role of future human services professionals. Describe your own growth as a future gardener and how you see yourself nurturing your “at-risk trees” (i.e. do you see yourself working with families? Working with specific risk categories? etc. Why?

Describe your own growth as a future gardener and how you see yourself nurturing your “at-risk trees” (i.e. do you see yourself working with families? Working with specific risk categories? etc. Why?

2. Apply the parenting cube model to either a) your own family experience or b) a youth you are personally acquainted with that you consider to be at risk.

3. Chose three Micro-systems and explain, in detail, each one’s effect on at-risk youth and their families (make sure to use several examples). Identify other systems that interconnect with these micro-systems and discuss the impact of these interconnections.

4. Why do some children drop out of school? What changes or measures would you recommend to reduce the dropout rate of children in America, both from psychological/social service perspective and a government/educational perspective?

5. Based on the information presented in Chapter 5, develop a “model” educational system that would provide an optimal educational environment for the at-risk student and explain how it would be implemented.
