Primary prevention occurs in homes, schools, and at the primary

Primary prevention occurs in homes, schools, and at the primary level of health care, such as, clinics, outreach centers, etc. Nurses work to develop and advocate for clients to assist them with planning preventive care. In order for clients to discuss and apply prevention strategies with their nurse, motivation and teaching techniques must be assessed.

The US government has developed and identified seven proven prevention strategies to enable individuals to live long, healthy, productive lives:
• Tobacco Free Living
• Preventing Drug Abuse and Excessive Alcohol Use • Healthy Eating
• Active Living
• Injury and Violence Free Living
• Reproductive and Sexual Health
• Mental and Emotional Well-Being
