Readiness Assessment
At the end of this activity, you will be able to identify the stage of readiness to participate in recovery activities of the character in the movie.
To prepare for this activity, be sure to:
Review and participate in the discussion on signs and symptoms.
Read the article, Cohen, M., Anthony, W., Farkas, M. ?Assessing and Developing Readiness for Psychiatric Rehabilitation ?, Psychiatric Services, May 1997 Vol 48, No 5, p. 644-646
Things to think about: how do Need for Change, Commitment to Change, Self Awareness, Environmental Awareness, and Personal Closeness impact an individual?s experience with recovery? Why would it be important to evaluate these areas prior to recovery activities?
Based on the video, Half Nelson, write up a Readiness Assessment of the character?s current state of readiness to participate in rehabilitation. Include in the assessment the five core areas ? Need for Change, Commitment to Change, Self Awareness, Environmental Awareness, and Personal Closeness.
Your assessment should include where Daniel (the main character in the movie) is in relation to these areas (in terms of his addictive behavior) and a rationale as to why you have rated him on each variable the way that you did. Be clear in your justification for the ratings you give in each section.
