Far from Home

Case Study: & Far from Home" (Dreisbach, 2009)
All police chiefs must be concerned with the behavior of their personnel on or off-duty, in jurisdiction or out of jurisdiction. In 1995, police officers from the New York City Police Department were in Washington, D.C. for ceremonies in connection with ?Police Week.? Several NYPD officers ?got drunk in their hotel, took off their clothes, poured beer down an escalator rail, and then slid down the rail? (Driesbach, 2009 p. 196). When complaints were received from hotel management and police officials of the Metropolitan Police Department (DC), the NYPD officers indicated that they were not in their home jurisdiction of New York City and were off-duty.
If you were the police chief whose officers were involved in this type of conduct, what would you do? Would these officers be subject to disciplinary action upon their return to New York? Referring back to the readings for Week 1, pp. 196 ? 219 of Ethics in Criminal Justice, and the readings and discussion for Week 10, students will submit a written critique concerning the professionalism of the NYPD officers involved in the incident described and your actions as chief of police. The primary question to be addressed is: ?Should police officers be held to a higher standard of behavior than other citizens?? A second question to be addressed is what to do with officers who lack integrity as demonstrated by their actions.
Grading will be based on the degree to which students meet the following criteria:
