How does psychoanalytic theory conceptualise the ‘self’? Using theory and research, critically evaluate this with reference to transference and counter-transference.
This essay is very important for me. Please accept it, if you think you can follow all of the instructions.
The essay will require you to demonstrate that you are able to critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate concepts and argument in the academic literature and to present a persuasive, coherent and well-argued case in support of your position on the topic at hand. I will submit the marking/grading criteria.
This essay should be max. 3000 words.
Please be careful for language.
Essay topic is:How does psychoanalytic theory conceptualise the ‘self’? Using theory and research, critically evaluate this with reference to transference and counter-transference.
Essay’s structure should be like that.
First I would focus on the theory about the ‘self’. The one I think you should read is Klein’s object relation theory (e.g. internal representations of good and bad objects). Start by discussing how this theory conceptualises the self. You may want to talk about projective identification here, which is important in terms of splitting off parts of the self onto another. This will link nicely to transference and counter-transference.
You do not need to reference numerous studies or research. You will have described object relations theory, so that is the theory part covered. I would try to find some studies that support the theory. There may not be many out there, so you may have to rely on single case studies.
Next, discuss the theory in relation to transference and counter-transference. Particularly thinking about the therapeutic relationship. You may define the concepts before relating them back to the self.
