As you begin developing the framework of a comprehensive plan for your organization, conduct a cursory scan of its internal and external environments. Scan the internal environment to identify strengths and weaknesses of the organization. Then, scan the external environment to identify factors that offer opportunities for improvement and those factors that pose threats for the organization.
Interview a person in your organization who has responsibility for comprehensive/strategic planning and discuss how environmental scanning is used (or why it is not used) in their planning process.
The assignment consists of 3 parts.
• Part I: Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the organization thorugh an internal scan of the environment.
• Part II: Identify the opportunities and threats through an external scan of the environment.
• Part III: Prepare a one-page case study describing how environmental scanning is used or why it is not used in the planning process of the person you interviewed in your organization.
