Nurses Dealing with Teenagers

Scenario: A 17 year old female American born, (2nd generation immigrant from China) is being seen with her mother for a school physical. Her mother expresses through the interpreter that the teen is frequently sullen, and has angry outburst at home especially when one of the parents reminds her to do chores, homework, or visit with her grandparents. The teen rolls her eyes at her mom and says that she is just too busy with her friends to stay home and be with the family. Mom is fearful that the child is rejecting the family ways, and becoming too Americanized.
Questions: (1) How would you approach ongoing assessment of this child and family? (2) What communication techniques would be beneficial or helpful in this scenario? (3) What communication techniques would be a barrier in this scenario?
