Acute Illness and Major Trauma
Assessment Guidance
The assignment submitted for this module will take the form of a 3500 word essay within which knowledge and understanding of the learning outcomes must be demonstrated.
Learning Outcomes
1. Apply an in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of acute illness and major trauma to the evidence-based management of the patient
2. Critically reflect on the skills of assessment and triage in relation to patients who present with acute illness and major trauma, acknowledging the bio-psycho-social needs of the patient and their family
3. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of communication skills in the emergency setting and the breaking of bad news.
4. Critically appraise the different needs of specific patient groups, including children, older people and people with a mental health disorder who present with acute illness and/or major trauma
5. Examine the relevant evidence, clinical guidelines and healthcare policy which relate to therapeutic interventions used to treat patients with acute illness and major trauma
Assignment Guidelines
The essay should commence with an introduction which explains to the reader the purpose of the essay and the topics to be covered. The main body of the essay needs to critically analyse the theories that support the learning outcomes. Therefore you need to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of an acute illness and major trauma. The acute illness or major trauma can relate to a patient you have seen. You then need to critically reflect on the skills of assessment and triage in relation to acute illness and major trauma to do this discuss the theories and models that relate to assessment and triage, consider how you ensure the bio-psycho-social needs of the patient and family are met during triage and assessment. A critical knowledge of communication skills in the emergency situation needs to be demonstrated; you should utilise relevant theories and discuss the challenges of communication in a pressurized situation. You also need to discuss the breaking of bad news. Throughout the essay ensure you address the needs of specific patient groups and how processes need to be adapted to accommodate differing needs. Finally demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evidenced based practice and the resources that support this, you could relate this to the patient used to meet learning outcome
