Topic: Short Story; explain what you see as one of the themes, or main ideas,.

Subject: English Literature
The paper for this course asks that you explain what you see as one of the themes, or main ideas, in a story we’ve read this semester and show how the story expresses that theme through its literary techniques. For example, you might explain how “The Yellow Wallpaper” uses setting and symbolism to illustrate the oppression of women in the early 20th century; how “The Death of Ivan Ilych” uses the characterizations of Ivan, Gerasim, and Praskovya to show the effect of materialism on human relationships; or how “Araby” uses religious allusions to capture the lack of faith in modern Ireland.
Short Stories Lists
Louisa May Alcott "My Contraband"
Stephen Crane "The Blue Hotel"
Charolotte Perkins Gilman "The Yellow Wall-Paper"
Nathaniel Hawthrone "Young Good Brown"
Washington Irving "The Legendary of Sleepy Hallow"
Herman Melville "Bartleby the Scrivener"
Leo Tolstoy "The Death of Ivan Ilych"
