Beautiful Ones are Not Yet Born

Write about the function of violence in Beautyful Ones are Not Yet Born OR at least three stories by Ama Ata Aidoo, OR Season of Migration to the North OR Dead before Dying.
Critically assess the function of violence within ONE of the given texts. Every paragraph must answer the question. What is its function, to refute the prejudice ideas on Africa or to concur on them? To educate readers on African violence through aspects of civilised culture (ie. tradition and spiritual beliefs that are violent but a part of that African culture, an idea that has previously been denied)? This needs to incorporate a deep literary analysis (ie how the authour conveys the function of violence, i.e through use metaphors/similies etc this specific idea connected with violence etc), what effect including violence has on the novel, if violence was not included in a particular scene what would the effect have been, showing the function of it using the reverse. Give consideration to contextual aspects affecting the literature. Detail the types of violence the author capitalises on, (domestic, traditional, murder etc) and its specific function. It needs to be an intelligent, individualistic view on the the question. I have been told by my tutor to use a clear and direct approach and to avoid ‘flowery’ language. My course is called ‘The Image of Africa In Literature and Culture’. On the whole the course is about how Africa is portayed (and often wrongly) within literature and culture. Must include critics quotes and literary argument of some sort that you either agree with or don’t. You can go 10% over the word limit (200 words extra bringing the total to 2200)
