Destination Management – Kenya

Following a successful presentation of your proposal you are expected to write a 3,000 word report (excluding the bibliography) for the same destination that you chose for your presentation.
The purpose of the assignment is for you to demonstrate a critical understanding of your knowledge of destination management through proposing strategies to solve the challenges the destination is facing.
When writing your report you must draw on the current literature and also demonstrate that you have been critical, analytic and reflective. Below I have suggested the sections you could use for your report and what should go into each section, however if you would prefer to have more sections to personalise your report you can but make sure you send me a draft before final submission. Below are some guidelines as to what should be included in each section.

Executive summary:
• No more than 300 words.
• Remember it should include all of the key points. Remember to say what the destination is, the problem and the key strategies you are suggesting for addressing these problems. If you have identified any limitations summarise these. It is not an introduction to the report.
• Treat it as a separate document and write it LAST when you have finished the main report and have these key points.
Table of contents:
• This goes after the executive summary
• Remember to number the sections in the report and put in page numbers. Do not use too many sub-headings as you lose the flow of the report.
• The executive summary if more than one page is normally numbered separately using Roman Numerals.
• Use the tool in Word to create your table of contents as it will update it as you go. Go to References on the top menu, then click on Table of contents and select a format. Remember to update it before you hand your assignment in.

Brief introduction:
• This should introduce your destination – where is it, what type of destination is it, who are the key stakeholders, what are the main attractions there? Use the theory to help you in this part and include all of the information which contextualises the rest of the assignment but you must write succinctly – if you spend too long on this section you will not have enough words left for the rest.
• You should also briefly introduce the organisation of your report in the introduction.
The problem/challenge you have identified:
• This is where you critically evaluate the destination management challenges/ problems that your chosen destination faces. Remember to be specific and to show your understanding of destination management drawing on theory and practice. For example use models as frameworks.
• In this section you also need to show evidence to back up your points. Who has said there is a challenge? Has somebody written a report, or did you interview somebody, or is it your own primary research bringing together different sources?

What solutions have you provided?
• You can label this section however you want but it must focus on strategies that the destination needs to put in place in order to overcome the challenges. Remember these must be realistic and you need to give timeframes so that you can evaluate if you have been successful.
• You can use your knowledge from books, articles and other publications to give you ideas or to show good practice – remember to reference them to demonstrate your reading.
• Or you could use your own or knowledge you have picked up from individuals running destinations. You can reference these people too by stating it is personal communication if they don’t mind being identified.
• You also need to highlight any implications of your solutions – here you need to step back and ask yourself ‘what (if any) would happen if someone were to implement the solutions I am proposing here?’ Critical and reflective thinking will be very useful in this sense. If you want a separate section for this part, it is absolutely fine.
• Remember this is the main part of your report.
Evaluation
• In this section you need to discuss how you will evaluate the success of your solutions. What will you measure and how?

Conclusion
• The conclusion must not contain any new information.
• Remember to re-state what you were trying to do at the beginning of the project, then briefly explain what you did and the key conclusions you have drawn.
• You may want to call this section conclusions and recommendations if you have ideas for further research or actions that will need to be undertaken but which the destination may have limited control over e.g. national tourism policy.
Bibliography
• Remember to include all the sources you used for your assignment.
• List them in alphabetical order (by author)
• Make sure they are presented according to the Harvard system.
Appendices
• You can include appendices if you want to. These could be copies of emails from people you have talked to, photographs from the WTM or the destination.
• You must get permission from people if they are going to be identified as a source of information.
• Do not put in information that you have not referred to in the main text – we only look at appendices when you tell us to in the main body of the report.
