Engineering and Construction

As a new engineer working at a secret space laboratory, you (to be completed individually) have been assigned the task of providing a conceptual study (preliminary design) for a wheel nut and accompanying locking mechanism that is to be fitted to the next generation mars rover.
Due to the existing rover wheel and spindle design, only a single wheel nut must retain the wheel to the spindle. The spindle is free to rotate and dowel pins transfer torque to the wheels, hence the wheel nut only needs to secure the wheel to the spindle with a specified preload force. An important requirement for the wheel nut design is it must feature a self-locking mechanism so the wheel nut will not loosen from the spindle. The locking device must be a mechanical lock and not reliant on friction (e.g. Nylock nuts) because the nut must be quickly, easily and repeatedly removed from the spindle.
The final selected conceptual design must be ready for detailed design, where the overall concept is viable as a successful product with major materials and manufacturing techniques selected and off-the-shelf components are identified where applicable.

The deliverable is a complete concept feasibility study that includes:
1. Product definition and feasibility of initial concepts, provide the following (6 marks):
? Product Design Specification of the problem, which clearly states the problem constraints and criteria
? Illustrations of at least three (3) different viable concepts – labelling main design features
? Evaluation of the three (3) different concepts and selection of one concept
2. For the selected concept in Part 1, provide the following (4 marks):
? A more detailed and accurate illustration of the chosen concept – this diagram should label most features that define the concept (i.e. there should be a label detailing each design feature and justifying why it exists).
? Briefly describe the manufacturing techniques that will be employed
Note
I. The written section of Part 1 and Part 2 should not exceed 3 pages and 2 pages respectively. This a maximum of 5 WRITTEN pages – this does NOT include concept illustrations.
II. Your task: Design of the wheel nut and locking system, NOT surrounding parts (e.g. wheel or spindle), however, the nut must lock on the spindle so you may need to sketch design features on the spindle.
