environmental Impacts

Person 3: Critiques all three sectors or municipalities in terms of land impacts (e.g., ha used, land offset, habitat areas preserved, etc.)
Areas choosen
1.MOntreal Qc, Canada
2.London,On,Canada
3.Detroit,MI,Canada
Many public corporations, private companies, and public organizations report what they do in terms of
environmental, social, and economic performance. In some ways, this represents a ’self-environmental
assessment’. Sometimes, this is also called sustainability reporting; on older term is triple-bottom line
reporting. If a company is involved, then it often focuses on a particular product or service they offer,
and discuss how this offering impacts (or benefits) the environment. The quality of information that is
reported and how it is presented is sometimes questionable, although these aspects have improved
significantly in recent years.
What is now a growing concern is how a whole sector or entity – such as a city – affects the
environment. For example, rather than just considering how GM or Ford affects the environment, how
does the entire automotive sector affect the environment? As another example, how does the City of
Toronto affect its environment (and neighbouring environment)?
For this project, you will be asked to examine one of the following situations:
1. Three sectors that are related within the same theme; OR
2. Three municipalities.
At the end of your analysis, you will need to conclude which sector or municipality is the ”most
sustainable” compared to the other two. What would constitute three sectors within the same theme?
For example, if you choose a transportation theme, three sectors within that could be: automotive,
aerospace, and rail. If you choose the natural resources theme, three sectors within that could be:
petroleum, mining, and forestry. If you choose a municipality, it may be easier to choose ones that are
similar in size and scope. You are not limited to Canadian cities.
To do this project, you will form into groups of E students each. Each student will select one sector
or municipality that reports their sustainability or environmental performance. Ideally, this sector should
issue a corporate environmental (or sustainability) report. The report may only appear as a web-based
report. If there is no sector report, there may still be significant information available from other
sources, or from the major companies within that sector.
Individual Component:
Each person will critigue one sector or municipality in terms of the following category groups:
Person 1: Critiques all three sectors or municipalities in terms of air impacts (e.g., SOx, NOx,
CO2, etc.).
Person 2: Critiques all three sectors or municipalities in terms of water impacts (e.g., L used, L
treated, etc.)
Person 3: Critiques all three sectors or municipalities in terms of land impacts (e.g., ha used,
land offset, habitat areas preserved, etc.)
For each person, there may be additional issues such as energy (e.g., energy used, conservation
schemes, etc.), health and safety (e.g., for the workers and community) and social and economic
aspects (e.g., community involvement). You may include these topics as appropriate; not all categories
will apply equally in all sectors or municipalities.
