Aim of assessment
This first assessment aims to assess the student’s capacity to identify the structure of their chosen organisation and discuss the strengths and limitations of this structure in enabling the organisation to achieve their stated mission, vision and strategic objectives. Students are expected to be able to discuss the importance of vision, mission and goals for organisations. The assessment also allows students to organise their analysis in a formal essay form, applying the APA referencing conventions to their work. Details
Obtain a copy of a health organisation’s (health region, area health service, group or facility) vision, mission, strategic goals/objectives and organisational structure. Using the documents and the literature, analyse the following:
- the type of organisational structure that has been adopted and how it relates to the vision, mission and goals of the organisation
- the advantages and limitations of the identified structure for health care delivery
- the utility of the organisational structure in relation to the achievement of the organisation’s mission and goals
- the key lines of authority and responsibility for achieving organisational goals/objectives
- aspects of the structure which facilitate or impede organizational and group performance and potential solutions
This assignment requires you to critically analyse documentation from a health care organisation, the Unit Learning Guide and Modules readings in order to understand the organisation from the point of view of its purpose and what it aims to achieve (the vision and mission); how it aims to achieve it (strategy and goals) and how it is structured to provide clear lines of authority and responsibility for achieving the vision, mission and strategy. The analysis should critically examine the type of organisational structure that has been adopted by the organisation and comment on the usefulness of that type of structure in helping the organisation to achieve the stated vision, mission, strategy and goals.
Critical thinking and analysis involves interpreting information, asking questions and evaluating that information, relating theory to practice, identifying problems and possible solutions, developing an argument and supporting it with evidence from the literature and examples from the field. The two primary aims of this type of thinking and writing are to 1) evaluate the work of other people and 2) develop your own arguments (supported by sound evidence) .
