NSW Curriculum Design (Science – Elementary School)

Task
Part A
• Develop an outline of a 5 week Science and learning unit (approximately 10 lessons) for a given syllabus content strand and K-6 stage (no more than a 1000 words or 5 pages).
• Map your unit outline against the 5 other primary Key Learning Area (KLA) outcomes (approximately 500 words).
Part B
• Implement and evaluate one of the learning activities in your unit plan with students EITHER as part of a school visit OR with one/several children of your choice (in real life or virtual environments). Consider how you will evaluate the experience and how you might encourage the children to reflect. It is expected that a considerable amount of time will be invested in preparing for and delivering the learning experiences.
Report on the implementation and evaluative process and suggest how you could improve the delivery of the chosen activity (approximately 1000 words)

Rationale
This assignment is designed to give you the opportunity to explore approaches to curriculum integration within the NSW Board of Studies (2013) Science K–10 (incorporating Science and Technology K–6. It will encourage you to look at the content and process strands within the syllabus in an holistic and connected way, at the same time introducing you to the concepts of rich tasks and productive (authentic) pedagogies. You will also be able to enrich your understandings of these concepts through co-operative interactions with colleagues through the Interact environment.
The first assessment item in this subject addresses student learning objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 and Graduate Teacher Standards 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, 2.1.1, 2.13, 2.14, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, 3.14 4.1.2, 4.1.5, 6.1.1 and 6.1.6.
