Allegory of the Cave by Plato








In “The Allegory of the Cave,” Plato writes about prisoners in a cave who can only see shadows on a wall, and concludes, “All in all, then, what people in this situation would take for truth would be nothing more than the shadows of the manufactured objects.” The prisoners take illusion for truth. But, what does Plato mean by “truth” in the allegory? Who possesses the truth? And how?
