Philosophy – Euthenasia

Choose one of the prompts below and write a careful and thoughtful essay:
1. Callahan argues that the value of self-determination alone is insufficient for justifying voluntary active euthanasia. He uses two examples to support his argument: slavery and dueling. Present Callahan’s argument as strongly as you can. Is this a convincing argument? Why or why not?
2. Callahan points out that many proponents of euthanasia hold that distinguishing between killing and letting die is sometimes a mistake. Carefully present Callahan’s criticisms of this view. Using both the Brock reading and my lectures, construct a response to Callahan’s criticisms.
