Skills Foundation – NRS10734 – Evidenced Based Case Study


You are undertaking your clinical placement on a busy surgical unit. While attending to your patient, Mrs Jones, 64 years old, right hip replacement and is day 2 post op, complains to you that she is in
pain. You go to her medication chart and see that she is written up for Ketorolac, 1omg, IM, QID. You prepare your equipment, explained procedure and gained consent from your patient. You review the situation and decide to give the injection.
Your options for injection site
are:
o Deltoid muscle
o Vastus lateralus
o Ventrogluteal
o Dorsal Gluteal
You must choose the most appropriate site for your injection.
Part A: Provide current evidenced based literature regarding the best site for giving an intramuscular injection (IMI).
Part B: In your case scenario, provide a rationale for why you chose the muscle that you did
