Sociology: Place, Time, Division


A. Choose and read ONE of the following auto-/biographies set in Australia;
Unpolished Gem by Alice Pung
B. Make notes during your reading, on these following aspects within the auto-biography:
1.Locate the key places and time span of the story.
2.Identify the key social inequality issues raised in the auto-biography ? e.g., class, gender, ethnicity, disability, etc.
3.Identify the key social factors in identity formation: such as familial, neighbourhood, education, religion and work issues raised in the auto-biography.
4.Identify the key social forces in the book: war, displacement, immigration, poverty, etc
C. Choose and read at least one chapter from each of the three parts of the book Sociology: Antipodean Perspectives that relate to the auto-/biography you are using.

Write a short 750 word essay on the sociological issues (of inequality issues, factors, and forces) in the auto/biography that you have chosen from the list provided above. Be sure to make your short-essay discussion incorporate reference to the relevant chapters of Sociology: Antipodean Perspectives (2nd edition, 2012).
