Repbulic and Democracy in 500BC

In the last decade of the 500s BC, two new governmental ideas arose—one on the Italian peninsula and one on the Attica peninsula near the Aegean Sea. Discuss the rise and development of these political ideas: Republic and Democracy.

Explain the critical steps that it took in both locations to achieve what was created, and clearly show the basic governmental structures that both developed (how did they govern? What offices were in place?).  Finally, make an assessment on which, if either, would be a better form of government in today’s world.

Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974

Paper instructions:
•    Describe the purpose, creation, enforcement, and revisions of your chosen environmental law. Include any relevant historical information that led to its passage and a summary of the purpose of the law as it relates to human health and the environment.

•    Identify which federal and state government environmental agencies enforce your chosen law and compare the agency’s roles in protecting the environmental resources.

•    Most environmental laws passed by the legislative branch result in the enforcing agencies writing regulations that will implement the law. Describe where in the Code of Federal Regulations you would find regulations for your chosen law.

•    Summarize the benefits that your chosen law will make to the environment and human health, in your state or city. Include in your discussion how the law addresses either the “Tragedy of the Commons”, the free-rider problem, or pollution as an externality.

•    Based on your research, compare the benefits of the law to the costs that it may impose on society and draw conclusions on the adequacy of the law to achieve its purpose.

Reflections on Federal Immigration Policy

For your journal entry, you will explore aspects of your personal experience and/or beliefs regarding significant public policies and what you have learned in your readings. As you reflect, please address the following questions:

What are the major current federal immigration policy issues?
How do you feel about related policies?
What, if anything, has changed or is changing, and how does it affect you personally?
What were your thoughts prior to reading this week’s reading assignments?
How has your perspective been either reinforced or changed now that you are more informed?

Policy Termination

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) was a compromise between the Clinton administration and its opponents in Congress and the military. Compromise sometimes yields good policy, but sometimes it produces internally inconsistent and counterproductive policy. Using DADT as an example, what do you see to be the potential strengths and weaknesses of policy borne of compromise? The 18-year process of repealing DADT suggests that policy termination can be a lengthy process. Should policies be inherently difficult to terminate, especially those rooted in public attitudes?

Obama and Romney on Immigration
