Early Medieval and Late Gothic
Chapters 14, 15, and 16 deal with Western European Art from the Early Medieval through the Late Gothic Periods. This long period of time is generally termed the Middle Ages, 500 – 1350 CE. As you study these three chapters covering the Middle Ages, you will notice that there is a gradual shift in style from art that is more abstract (fig. 14-5) to art that is quite realistic (fig. 16-30). This trend eventually leads to the Renaissance with Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci, Raphael and all the other great masters of that period, studied in Art History II – ARTS1304.
