Content area reading are the concepts & ideas used by teachers to structure subjects and teaching. On the other hand content area literacy is the teaching of skills in all content classes, such as teaching reading to students in English, Math & also Social Studies with the same strategies. In so doing, three principal components would be used; general literacy skills, content specific skills & prior knowledge of content (McKenna & Robinson, 1990).

Inquiry is the ability of students to find solutions to problems based on questioning key ideas. Students must read to understand so they correctly get answers to questions to problems posed by the teacher. Activities will be molded around students inquisitions that will lead to more reading & writing with a purpose.
For example looking at the topic of bullying, students can come up with their own definitions & solutions from looking at 6 essential questions in groups related to the topic. Also they can create a real world scenario by making a public service announcement informing the public about bullying.

3. Answer Tyronie three questions and give three questions to the forum to answer.
A)    How have teachers overlooked content literacy?
B)    How about inquiry?
C)    What do you think of the definition I stated?

B)  Comment on Judith response to forum answer. Do you agree or disagree. In one paragraph.

There is definitely a difference between content area reading and content area literacy. Content area reading deals with what the teacher is going to use to help the students read and try to remember. In other words, how the teacher is going to structure his or her instructions to suit the curriculum he or she has to cover. On the other hand, content area literacy deals with enhancing students' way of thinking about reading across the curriculum and not just in subject area like content area reading. Students are made to think and construct ideas through various activities that will enable them to discuss, read and write from many different perspectives. Learning that takes place will be more student centered, purposeful and constructive as opposed to teacher centered and curriculum driven in content area reading. However, both are necessary for students to be more effective and proficient.
Inquiry is the the manner in which students will address the issue of focusing on answering questions based on what they understood when they read and the problems that may arise, but with the help of some guidance on the part of the teacher. Thus, it is important for the teacher to model, mentor and monitor. This way students will be able to understand what they are looking for and arrive at the correct answers or ideas.
The teacher for example can bring a piece of reading about a current issue affecting the country. She can have them work in groups and read the excerpt. She can then have several questions for students to answer and then have a class discussion. She can find out what students know about the issue, how they feel about the issue, and have them explain what some advantages and disadvantages of the issue are and explain and interpret what can happen given different scenarios. Those that had no idea of the issue should create questions. This way they get to think outside of the box and focus on the reading, discussion and the answers they will come up with to write their answers. Teacher can then listen to their answers and add to it as well. Students should leave the lesson knowing about what the issue was all about and how it affects/contributes to our country.

Please read Slater's and Turkle's essay and use Hochschild's essay in connection with Turkle's.(Two essays will be uploaded)

Paper instructions:

Essay Question:
Take what Slater has taught us about mechanical interventions into the human brain and use it to critically analyze Turkle's therories about the authentic and the inauthentic in the age of high technology. In your piece, see if you can use Slater to confirm, challenge, refute, limit, extend, complicate, raise questions for, or otherwise rethink and reassess Turkle's claims about implications of the authentic and the inauthentic.

Is Deep Brain Stimulation and its results a classic case of the inauthentic as Turkle understands it? Or are they something quiet different?
How can Slater help us see Turkle's claims in a new way? Or can she??

Cultural Influences in Development

Assignment 2: RA 2: Cultural Influences in Development
In this assignment, you will apply your knowledge of cultural influences on development to create psychosocial workshops for a specific population.
Tasks:
Scenario
As a human services administrator at a local agency, one of your duties is to write descriptions of the agency’s community workshops to publish in the community’s resource guide delivered free of charge to all residents. These are the titles of the workshops:
•    Single Moms: A workshop for working mothers to help them balance work and home
•    Community Living: A workshop for those transitioning from incarceration to society
•    Caregiver Parents: A workshop for those taking care of aging parents, while also raising a young family
•    Parenting Teens: A workshop to enable parents to help their teenage children transition to young adulthood
Your community largely comprises blue-collar workers, many of whom are working on either visas or green cards; thus, there are pockets of immigrant communities. Some of the workers are those who were reintegrated into society after prolonged incarceration (more than three years). The median age of the area is thirty-five years, and multigenerational households are commonplace. The public school system is underresourced, and truancy is a big problem. Many students do not complete high school, and standardized test scores are well below what is federally mandated for funding.
Directions:
1.    For each of the four workshops, write a 100- to 200-word description on the basis of the following:
•    Utilize what you have learned throughout the course to describe specific services that each workshop will include.
•    Tailor each description to the community and the target audience for the workshop.
•    Apply cultural and multicultural sensitivity within and across all descriptions. Remember, a single mother may also read the description for community living. Craft your descriptions to be readable and sensitive to all.
•    Account for individual differences and environmental contexts that will influence developmental changes.
•    Account for the role of culture in shaping attitudes, values, and behaviors.
2.    For each description, write a two-page rationale. Use at least three references from scholarly sources to demonstrate how you determined which services to offer for each workshop.
Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and use accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Submission Details:
Write your paper in a Microsoft Word document.
By Wednesday, August 7, 2013, save your paper as M6_A2_lastname_firstinitial.doc and submit it to the M6: Assignment 2 RA 2 Dropbox.
