The Real Social Network

Adpated from Rough Sketch (click) by Dana Milbank:
Millions of people have read this writer’s work. You can find it everywhere, being discussed in all kinds of major news outlets. And it’s all over the blogosphere, generating volumes of discussion, flames, trolls, and even pieces of cogent criticism. I urge you to read it at once! You won’t be able to put it down, and its highs and lows say so much about modern life.
So who is this writer? Nobel Prize for Literature winner Mario Vargas Llosa?
Please. I’m talking about Karen Owen, Duke University grad and author of a “senior thesis” sex list.
Here is what happened…………………..
The 42-slide PowerPoint that has drawn widespread attention was meant to be shared between friends. In it, Karen Owen, Trinity ’10, vividly describes the sexual performance of 13 current and former Duke students, all of them varsity athletes and many of them lacrosse players.
After Owen sent the PowerPoint to a few friends, it eventually made its way across listservs at Duke and then onto sites such as Jezebel, The Huffington Post and CNN. At one point Thursday night, “Karen Owen Powerpoint” was the second most-searched term in the United States on Google. “Duke Powerpoint” was 10th.
Deadspin, a sports blog, and Jezebel, a blog that covers women’s interests, first posted the PowerPoint last Thursday. The document has since been viewed more than 2 million times on the sites.
Deadspin initially posted the presentation complete with the names of the men, but later removed them. Jezebel interviewed Owen, but did not initially identify her.
“I regret it with all my heart,” Owen told Jezebel. “I would never intentionally hurt the people that are mentioned on that.”
What would it take for an individual to erase his digital footprint? Is it even possible to exit the Internet? The short answer is no.
Welcome to the real social network! How big is your digital footprint?

What level of privacy do you expect as an Internet user?
Post your comments on Karen Owen’s dilemma.

Evaluating Websites

Watch the YouTube video – Evaluating Websites. This short video describes how to evaluate and compare websites. As you watch, think about the websites you visited while doing research for your Module One essay.
Now, reveiw Chapter 21 in Quick Access – Evaluating Sources.
Think about bias and point of view. Point of view or bias reminds us that information is rarely neutral. Because data is used in selective ways to form information, it generally represents a point of view.
Every writer wants to prove his point, and will use the data and information that assists him in doing so.
When evaluating information found on the Internet, it is important to examine who is providing the “information” you are viewing, and what might be their point of view or bias.
If you are looking at products produced and sold by that corporation, remember: you are looking at an advertisement.
If you are reading about a political figure at the website of another political party, you are reading the opposition.
Does this document reside on the Web server of an organization that has a political or philosophical agenda?
If you are looking for scientific information on human genetics, would you trust a political organization to provide it?
Never assume that extremist points of view are always easy to detect. Some sites promoting these views may look educational.

Think back over the course of the last few days. Consider where you went and what you did. Now, try to remember any advertisements you may have seen. These might be on typical settings, such as billboards or television, or ads online or in your e-mail inbox. They may also appear in less obvious places, such as logos on clothing or in the background of a movie.
1.What was advertised and where did you see it? Can you remember the images and the products being advertised?
2.Is advertising effective? Why or why not? What does the pervasiveness of advertising say about our culture?
3.The film discusses how marketers seek to appeal to consumers, specifically through creating loyalty and a sense of membership. Do you know anyone who feels this way about a product or a possession? What does this say about the product or possession?
