Film analysis

Film Analysis: Analyse a shot, or sequence or any aspect ofa film, chosen from one ofthe films screened between weeks 1 to 4. In doing
this work use at least one ofthe ideas presented within the course to demonstrate your capacity for independent visual analysis propelled
by an idea. The idea chosen must be clearly defined and used as conceptual tool to develop your analysis. Please followthe detailed
guidelines provided below on howto go about this task in a systematic and principled manner.
Film Analysis Guidelines
1st Step:-
Choose
a segment from a film; a segment may be a single shot, a scene, a sequence or any other unit that you find interesting. If it is a one-shot
film then analyse the whole film but with the longerfilms it is best to delimit your choice to some specific aspect ofthe work.
2nd
Step:-
Describe what you actually see and (hear) in the shot as exactly as you can, using the basic film terminology provided in the course
reader. For example, ifa shot is in close-up, it is important to state this and analyse its implications both compositionally and for you
as spectator. To be able to do this you must view/study your chosen segment several times and take notes. Then, write at least two drafts of
your descriptive material paying particular attention to the quality of your prose. Be economical with the use of adjectives, especially
those pertaining to yourfeelings about what you see (i.e. “beautiful”) because at this stage what you need to do is be as objective as
possible in describing the compositional features, the movements and rhythms ofthe segment. Make sure that your prose is lucid, economical
and precise. Economy is essential because you have very few words to devote to the work of description. Description is a means to facilitate
analysis, which is the main focus ofthe exercise. See if you can bring the film to life, so to speak, through your descriptive prose.
3rd
Step:-
Analyse what you have carefully described by using at least one ofthe ideas and concepts introduced in the lectures. Use the ideas
creatively. For example, show how an idea operates in a film in a performative manner, visually.
4th Step:-
Make imaginative connections
between all ofthe above so that finally this piece ofwriting is an expression of how you see and understand the film. This is the moment
when you may thematise the more technical concerns previously analysed.

Developing hypotheses looking at null and alternate

Hypothesis and Data Collection

Knowing that the research question not only details the content area of investigation but also alerts the reviewer to the research design of the study and the method of analysis, develop a testable hypothesis for your next stage in the research process. This is followed by a data analysis process.

From your readings, you have learned that a testable hypothesis is basically a restatement of the research question with the addition that something is expected to result from the research investigation or not. Further, the research hypothesis may be stated in a directional or nondirectional form (null and alternate respectively).

Take your previously submitted course project research question and develop both the null and alternate hypothesis to fit the research question presented earlier.

When responding to this assignment, please make sure that you ensure the following:

Both hypotheses are aligned with the research question.
The hypotheses clearly identify whether the study is testing for differences, relationships, or effects.
Each hypothesis states how the research topic will be measured.
Each hypothesis states the desired alpha level.

From The Eight o’ Clock Ferry to the Windward Side: Seeking Justice in Guantanamo Bay by Clive Stafford Smith

There were many other examples of this convoluted language. One of the earliest clues that conditions at Guantanamo did not fit the serene picture painted by the US military as a spate of reports of suicide attempts by the captives. By September 2003 the official estimate of such incidents was thirty-two. The media reported an initial “ripple of concern at the number of Guantanamo detainees trying to take their own lives.” But then an odd thing happened: the Pentagon announced a radical reduction in the attempted suicide rate, cut effectively to zero. They emphasized the number of prisoners receiving treatment for depression and indicated that the prisoners were receiving medical care equal to that provided US soldiers, far better than most prisoners were used to getting back home. The implication was that everyone was on Prozac, happy now at Club-Med-in-the-Caribbean.
British journalist David Rose visited Camp Delta and soon detected the semantic deception at work behind these numbers:
The rate of suicide attempts has declined recently. This, however, has been achieved only because most of the detainees’ attempts to hang themselves have now been reclassified as “manipulative self-injurious behavior,” or SIB. Many SIBs would previously have been recorded as would-be suicides. They are running at two a week—about the same as the old rate for suicide attempts.
The military had reclassified suicide attempts as SIBs for fear of further negative publicity. (138-139)
