Discussion 3
Consider the many public health agencies that implement programs or initiatives to address current public health problems. Choose one agency that is of interest to you and has not been chosen by another student. Once you have chosen an agency, claim it by posting a reply to this discussion topic and changing the subject line of your post to the full name of the agency (no abbreviations or acronyms, please). Incorrectly titled posts will be given a grade of zero. Also, please note that an agency that has already been posted by another student is considered taken. Be sure to carefully review the posts of your classmates because posting the same agency (even with a different name), will result in a grade of zero. Next, thoroughly research your chosen agency. Then, edit your post and provide a written response to the following items:
1) Identify the agency’s type, i.e. governmental – federal, state, or local, non-governmental – private or non-profit
2) Document the agency’s mission statement
3) Identify the agency’s geographical jurisdiction, if it has one
4) Identify the population of people that is served by the agency
5) Detail one public health program implemented by the agency
6) Discuss one way that you feel the agency could better address a specific public health problem
Then, choose two responses posted by your classmates, read them, and investigate and comment on their discussions. The subject line for your comments to classmates should be left as the default title (RE: Original Post Title). Again, incorrectly titled posts and those that are late will be given a grade of zero.
Discussion 4
Health Resources and Services Administration abbreviated as HRSA is a federally run public health agency.
Their mission is “to improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled workforce and innovative programs. Its jurisdiction currently covers all of the United States. The agency serves those that are in poverty and do not have health insurance.
One program implented by HRSA is the HRSA of maternal and child health. This program strives to improve the physical, mental health, safety and well being of women and children. The program consists of tasks such as screening newborns for heredity diseases, giving the necessary vaccines to newborns, assessing mothers for depression, or giving dental services to children. With over 2 million pregnant women served, 4 million infants and 27 million children served with programs such as healthy start and lend many people are being aided.
I feel the agency could better address fitness. Fitness is a big key step in keeping people healthy and prolonging the health of individuals. If the agency would address fitness more, then they would prevent alot of ailments from occurring. Agree or Disagree
Discussion 5
Summit County Public Health (SCPH) serves on a community/county local level in the State of Ohio, Summit County. Summit County has a population of just over 540,000 people in 412.75 square miles. 80.6% of the population are white, 14.6% are black and 2.4% Asian, 1.8% and 2.1% are two or more races. 15.4% are aged 65 and older and 51% of the population is female. These statistics are noted on http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/39/39153.html
MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of Summit County Public Health is to protect and advance the health of the entire community through its policies, programs and activities that protect the safety, health and well-being of the people in Summit County. Through its policies, programs and activities, the Health District endeavors to create a healthful environment and ensure the accessibility of health services to all.
Summit County Public Health offers a variety of programs and services including a communicable disease unit that is “responsible for the prevention and control of infectious disease in the community. Protection of public health is accomplished through active case identification, assessment, data collection, public education, and referral to community health providers.” (http://www.scphoh.org/main.html)
SCPH also offers a free quit smoking program. This program is only offered in limited areas and I think the agency should offer the program in more locations throughout Summit County, as participants may attend if they do not have to travel so far. Currently this program is only offered in two locations, both on Tuesdays at 6pm. Agree or Disagree
Discussion 6
The committee recommends that every public health agency regularly and systemically collect, assemble, analyze and make available information on the health of the community, including statistics on health status, community health needs, and epidemiologic and other studies of health problems.
I believe that this recommendation has been met and has improved over time. Dating back to the beginning of public health, we can see that there are different records on different categories such as deaths, births, diseases, and other things. Looking at the way data used to be collected and the way we collect data now shows how we have improved on this recommendation. However, I do think that there is always room to improve. I do think that public health agencies can improve the timeliness of collecting data, but we must remember some agencies are small and underfunded. I think that the fact that they try to provide the best information to the public needs to be acknowledged and we should see the effort being made.
I think that when trying to see that this recommendation has been met we need to start at the state health department since each state has health statistics and a need to have the data easily accessed. Ohio has their own department of health and it can be found here (http://www.odh.ohio.gov/default.aspx). There is a tab at the top of the page where you can click to find more information on the data and statistics that Ohio has to offer. Once you are on this page you will see that they offer data on infectious diseases, child health, maternal health, and many more groups. When seeing the wide range of data offered, it shows that people are taking their time and researching into these things to be able to provide such detailed records. It shows that public officials are collect, assembling, and analyzing data. However, if you click to view the data on some of the subcategories you will find that the data is outdated. This is one of the ways that this recommendation can be improved.
I think that with the use of the internet collecting and providing information has been easier for public health officials. I think that if you were looking for some data on a certain subject you will most likely be able to find something you can use. I also think the internet has made collecting data much easier because they can provide citizens with online surveys to get more data instead of simply using mail in surveys or phone surveys. In this day and age almost everyone has access to the internet. Agree or Disagree
Discussion 7
The committee recommends that those engaged in knowledge development and policy planning in public health and in mental health, respectively, devote a specific effort to strengthen linkages with the other field, particularly in order to identify strategies to integrate these functions at the service delivery level (p.12).
In my opinion this is not completely met. I feel that it is improving however; there is still a long way to go in terms of being met. Since the 1988 Institute of Medicine reportFuture of Public Health that these recommendations came from there has been tremendous transformation from then to now. Much more needs to be done. As of 2009 as stated on the SAMHSA website in Transforming Mental Health in America: The Federal Action Agenda First Steps “Transformation of the mental health system will not be easy, nor will it happen overnight. Such wholesale change requires an unparalleled commitment on the part of the Federal government, State governments, communities, public- and private-sector providers, insurers, researchers, consumers, and family members to work together toward a single vision: the day when all adults with serious mental illnesses and all children with serious emotional disturbances live, work, learn, and participate fully in their communities.” Strengthening linkages with the other field consists of being able to do the research to further develop the scientific knowledge base that is needed to further identify strategies that integrate functions at the service delivery level. Research is underfunded. Policy development relies on the scientific knowledge base in making decisions pertaining to public health which leads to development of public health policy. In Principles of Public Health Practice it is stated that “a very small percentage of resources is allocated for health related research spent in the domain of public health” (p. 52). Another important aspect to consider is that public health is underfunded as well as stated in our text “resources do not match the need” (p. 54). Therefore it is hard to say this is completely met especially since there are still so many people that are in need of mental health services “slipping through cracks” on a regular basis.
