leadership theories and models


Learning Outcome 1
Examine a range of current theories and models of leadership and their applicability to different sub-divisions,
organisations, industries and sectors.
Sub-outcome 1: Evaluate a range of leadership theories and models that reflect current
thinking
Sub-outcome 2: Explain the expected impact of a range of leadership styles on specific sub-divisions, organisations,
industries, sectors or industries.
Project Instructions
You will work in a team (no more than 3) to complete this project. Student teams
are required to produce a 1,500 – 2,000 word report.
You need to:
Research and describe the differences between management and
leadership in detail.
Research and describe a range of current leadership theories and models.
Evaluate a selection ofthe above
leadership theories and models and their effects on at least two organisations that you are familiar with.
You must:
Link theories
and models to practical examples from either your own workplace or those of others in your group.
You must reference properly and marks
will be awarded for students who try to explain using their own words rather than quoting.
You need to produce work at a high level to
represent your current standing within your program of study.
Content Guide
Theories, models and styles: universal theories such as
Transformational Leadership, Transactional Leadership (Bennis, Bass), Charismatic Leadership (Conger and Kanungo, Shamir, House and Arthur,
1994), Level 7 Leadership (Collins, 2001).
Situational theories: eg Tri-dimensional Leadership Theory (Yukl, 2004)
Emotional intelligence
(EQ): its influence on leadership effectiveness, drivers; constrainers and enablers (Higgs and Dulewicz); studies on the overall competences
of leaders such as Dulewicz and Higgs; Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Cognitive (IQ) and Managerial (MO) Competencies.
Applicability to
different sub-divisions, organisations, sectors and industries: varying
importance of factors (eg Zajac, Kraatz and Bresser, 1999) such as
efficiency, reliability,
innovation, adaptation and human resources in sectors, organisations and sub-units, size and stage of development
of organisation eg business start-up versus established business, turnaround leadership, public or private sector, cultural
issues

There will be a reduction of 10% in your overall grade for each day the written part is late.

BbLearn course website. If you do have problems accessing SafeAssign you may also submit via the course BbLearn and your instructors email
to achieve the deadline.
Any extension will only be given prior to the submission deadline.

Learning Objectives

Scenario
There are many
way people communicate. These include presentations, networking, grapevine, reports, memos, letters, noticeboards, bulletins, newsletters,
announcement systems, telephone, fax, graph, tables, spreadsheets, databases, PowerPoint, email, webcam, video conference. There are many
other methods as well.
These communications occur between people by communication channels which can formal or informal. The can also be
either oral, written orvisual. They can be hard or soft copy based.
Yourtask will be to evaluate these and communicate them to me using a
suitable communication channel.
Instructions
1. You need to choose 4 ways that people communicate. You should have at least 1 that is
formal and electronic. You need to then explain howthis communication occurs. Higher marks will be awarded for lots of details.
2. In your
work organization you will need to find 4 ways that people communicate. Explain howthey communicate in yourworkplace. If you are not
working then please use yourwork placement. You will need to explain the process in details if you want to get a high mark.
3. Explain
why these are the chosen methods of communication (you will need to look at the benefits and costs).
4. Explain ifthese methods of
communication could be improved at yourwork? If so explain how?
5. Explain some other communication methods and channels that could be
used at yourworkplace that are currently not being used? How would they improve communication? You will get extra credit if you provide
more than 1 method.
5. You need to present yourfindings using a formal electronic medium. Justify your chosen communication channel. You
will get higher marks if you chose an appropriate method.

Theory of science and methodology


Course assignments:
1) A home exam that will cover Okasha, Potter and other relevant texts. Questions will be passed out in the beginning of the last week. Answer all the questions thoroughly in your own words (and when needed illustrate with your own examples). Give detailed references (also page numbers) to Okasha, Potter and to all the other literature that you use. There will be a maximum number of words (more instructions will be given when the exam is handed out).
More specifically: In your home exam you will be asked to: present and explain the basic (natural and social) scientific concepts and their use, describe the major scientific traditions (e.g. positivist, hermeneutic, critical) and account for their similarities and differences, account for the relevance and importance of scientific theory in relation to (qualitative and quantitative) methodology, and critically scrutinize truth claims and claims to objectivity.
2) Mandatory seminars on Buchanan: For each seminar (covering 2-3 chapter) each of you will be asked to hand in a short summary of the relevant chapters (for chapters 2-9) together with some reflections and comments (300-500 words for each chapter) and you will also be asked to present (in the seminar) some idea in the chapter that you find interesting or problematic. Your ideas will be the basis for the discussion in the seminar.
3) Written assignment. Write a short essay (2-3000 words) that takes up some important theoretical or ethical issue in David Buchanan’s book An Ethic for Health Promotion. You can use any other relevant knowledge or literature that you find pertinent to the issue (give detailed references to Buchanan and to all other sources). You can use your “hand-in texts” for the seminars as a basis for your essay, but make the text into a coherent whole.
More specifically: In the essay you should: present and explain one (or a few) relevant idea(s), theory(ies) and concept(s) chosen (from Buchanan’s book) and account for its/their use in a public health context, critically scrutinize this/these theory(ies) and concept(s) (introduced by Buchanan), account for the relevant ethical or “political” issues related to (qualitative and quantitative) scientific practice and research within public health, and analyze, as well as use, relevant arguments in relation to the idea/ideas chosen (in a critical public health context).
The essay should contain an introduction (where the problem or issue is introduced), an aim (that tells the reader what you want to achieve in the essay), and a presentation and critical discussion (together or in separate sections), with relevant arguments (empirical, theoretical, evaluative, normative), of the issue(s) you have chosen.
Criteria used to evaluate the essay:
Use of language.
Pedagogical lay out or structure (including headings and metacommunication).
Problem formulation (aim).
Correctness of the presentation of data, ideas, concepts, and theories.
Coherence (making the essay into a whole).
Argumentation.
Creativity and insight.
