Sustainable Development in Saudi Arabia
- The Saudi community is mainly composed by two social parties: extremists, and open-minded people.
- Extremists mostly adhere to the doctrine and values of ancients. (refuse/ against changes in the community)
- While the open-minded people call for globalization and gender equality.
- There is a remarkable change in peoples’ behaviors and attitudes in the past decade in the interest of sustainable development due to the increasing level of their awareness. (As a result of the openness to the other world, social Medias effect, etc.).
- The community is nowadays asking for more and more education, women rights, and youth empowerment.
- Serious steps have been taken by government to reinforce raising demands of the community.
- 40% of the biggest budget of the Kingdom’s history was allocated for education (This includes a thousand numbers of scholarships for inhabitants to study abroad which ultimately contributes in widening their horizons and exploring them to diverse cultures).
- Exceeded spending on education in the Kingdom of 7.3% of GDP global average for spending on education, which is 4.4%, according to recent data from the World Bank.
- Activating the role of women in society through allowing their participation in the current round of “Shura Council” for the first time in the country’s history (last year).
Body3
- Government should focus more effort on the youth generation which constitutes 70% of the society.
- I’d recommend that the government create a sort of link between the youth and itself through establishing a ministry or an organization which its primary concern is to work on the convergence of views between the youth and higher authorities.
- This will enable the youth to make decision and have an influence on the community at an early stage of their lives.
- When youth are given the opportunity to make decisions with the society, this will definitely contribute to the sustainable development.
Conclusion
- Given the massive transition from “Bidwin” lifestyle (living in tents and mud houses) to absolute civilization in 50 years period and what we have become (one of the biggest 20 economies in the world), a one can fairly claim that the behavior of the inhabitants is in line with the so call “sustainable development”
