The area of study should be a disease state or pathophysiological condition that is related to an organ system or organ covered in the current semester. After selecting a topic, the following information will be described in the research paper:
Definition – description of the disease/problem
Etiology – cause or causal factors of the disease/problem
Risk factors – indicate what individuals would demonstrate a greater probability for contracting the condition; this could indicate time periods or exposure hazards (i.e., age, stage of development, occupations, etc.)
Mechanism of the problem – what physiological effects are occurring in/on/to the body
Signs and symptoms – items that might assist in diagnosis
Secondary complications – additional effects that might occur secondary to the primary problem
Prognosis – long term direction, outcome of the disease, including possibility of elimination or cure
Prevention/Treatment/Management – possibility of avoiding, minimizing, or eliminating the problem
