Case Study


You Are the Manager
Motivation is the intensity of a person’s desire to engage in some activity. In a stress environment, one of the key attributes of a manager is to motivate his or her team to achieve the desired goal.
Tasks:
Listed below you will find 10 scenarios. Your task is to:
• Identify the intrinsic and extrinsic benefits of each person’s job.
• Determine and describe how you would motivate each of the described people to do their best work.
• Explain why you think your solution would be effective.
The 10 scenarios are:
1. Jeff, an entry-level employee in your accounting department, graduated from college six months ago. Jeff currently earns $45,000 a year, but he is expected to earn more in his first job out of school.
2. Charlotte, 40, worked as the executive assistant to the vice president of Public Relations of State University for 10 years. She earns a good salary but wonders if she should have opted for a different job.
3. Mai, a nurse who works in the intensive care unit of an urban hospital, feels as if she has witnessed too much gore and wonders if she would be happier working in a physician’s office.
4. Mr. Thomas, a third grade teacher, wonders if he is really contributing. He was always good at math and wonders if he should have pursued engineering as a career.
5. Bill, a mechanic at the local car dealership, was always good with his hands. He wonders if he should strike out on his own and open his own shop instead of working at the dealership for an employer.
6. Jimmy is a 15-year-old who is struggling in school. His last report card was filled with Ds and he yelled at his parents, “What’s the point?”
7. Laurie is a 27-year-old flight attendant. She works four days a week and shares child-raising duties with her husband who manages a local motorcycle dealership. Laurie recently took a pay cut so that the airline she works for could pull itself out of bankruptcy.
8. Marcus, 21, is working and going to school part-time to earn his degree in computer science. He works from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. help desk shift with an Internet provider.
9. Curt is an inside sales representative who works for commission. He wants to move into outside sales but that may not be possible because he has been working with the company for only a year.
10. Jennifer works for a pharmaceutical firm. Her job is to interview test subjects who tried experimental drugs.
