Diversity Considerations in Leadership

Diversity, in this course, is defined in its broadest terms. Diversity refers not only to race and ethnicity, but also to differences in gender, age, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, physical ability, and other criteria. Diversity brings with it opportunity and possibility, but providing leadership in settings that are highly diverse may be challenging to some. Effective leaders acknowledge the strengths of diversity, and work to address the challenges they experience within themselves and amongst colleagues. Leaders who work effectively with diversity can foster improved relationships and greater productivity in their organizations.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapter 13 in your course text, The Art of Leadership. Pay particular attention to the sections on managing diversity and diversity strategies and techniques.

Review the article, "Women and the Labyrinth of Leadership," and focus on the challenges that women face in leadership roles.

Review the article, "Challenges of Leading a Diverse Workforce," and pay particular attention to how generational differences can present challenges to leaders.

Think of a challenge that you might experience while leading in a diverse setting.

Consider two strategies you might use to address this challenge so as to provide effective leadership in such a setting.
