Description:
Pick a mainstream Hollywood film released within the past
year. Then write a 750-word critique inwhich you explain how the film
reinforces dominant ideological beliefs toward one of the following:gender,
sexuality, race, or youth.
The materials for modules 7, 8, 9, and 10 are especially
relevant for this assignment.
If you are focusing on gender, you might want to consider
how the film portrays any of the following as an idealand/or natural
phenomenon: the sexist division of labor; the nuclear family; the
commodification of women’sbodies; the male gaze; sexist stereotypes.
If you are focusing on sexuality, you might want to consider
the film’s representation of same-sex romance/sex,its implication that LGBT
people are inherently “different,” or its use of gay stereotypes to legitimize
traditionalmasculinity.
If you are focusing on race, you might want to consider any
of the following: the portrayal of racial and/orethnic minorities as “Other”;
the portrayal of white people as “saviours” of non-white people; the use of
raciststereotypes; the film’s erasure of institutionalization racism; the
notion of whiteness as a “neutral” racialidentity; the minimizing of racial
inequality by implying that non-whites are “just like” whites or by implying
thatwhites experience racial suffering as much as anyone. If you are focusing on
youth, you might want to look at the text’s representation of youth sexuality,
youth’spurported lack of discipline, youth subculture as destructive, or the
effect social inequality has on youthalienation.
Note: If a character in the film is reinforcing dominant
ideological beliefs (e.g. the character is racist, sexist, orhomophobic), this
may not mean that the film itself is endorsing the character's problematic
point of view.
You may discuss two or more categories (e.g. race and
gender) if you wish.
