Man's use of dominion over land

Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Pope’s “Epistle to Burlington” both deal with the themes of empire-building and man’s dominion over nature. Focusing on specifics within each text (imagery, tone, diction, etc.), write a paper in which you argue for just how empire is being represented by these two authors. How do these texts treat this theme similarly? How do they differ?  Be sure to argue a complex thesis.

Media & Technology, how video games help our driving skills.

Writing Project #2: Researching Media Culture
We have been researching media culture, that is, conversations about the role and responsibilities of the media in our culture.  “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne, argues that “…advertising images normalizes – and even make appealing – sexual and violent situations that most often threaten women and children.”  “Taking A Bite out of Twilight” by Carmen Siering, critiques the Twilight series as it relates to “…sex education, feminism, and what we believe about equality in romantic relationships.”  And, finally, Steven Johnson’s “Why Games are Good for You” offers a positive analysis of pop culture pastimes such as video games and potential skills kids can glean from this video culture.  All of these authors point to important conversations that public intellectuals have about our use of technology and the media.  “Whether you see media culture today as the end of culture as we know it, the same old stuff, or something entirely new – or perhaps all three – these readings raise provocative questions about the significance of our ‘just-for-fun’ pastimes.” (420)

For this writing project, you will need to research an issue relating to the media and our culture, or the media and technology or all three.  Join the conversation with an issue you feel worthy of discussion.  You do not want to report on an issue; rather, you want to make a strong claim as to why this issue is important and what you want us to understand.  Bring something new to the conversation.
As I read your essays, I will consider the following questions:
•    Does the essay have a clear purpose (rather than just a topic) that is thoroughly developed throughout the essay?
•    Does the essay introduce readers to the conversation about this issue by drawing on relevant sources and using sources to provide various kinds of information about the topic (ie: context, definition, naysayer, support implications, etc.)?
•    Do the paragraphs develop well-defined claims with specific examples from the text and detailed explanations?
•    Are the paragraphs linked together into a well-developed and coherent interpretation of the chosen text?
•    Do the sentences of the essay express the writer’s ideas clearly and effectively?
