Jurors with mental illness

A study of a contemporary problem in criminal justice.
Course Objectives:
Concerning the issues regarding jurors with mental illness:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the American jury.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the issues facing those who are summoned for jury duty.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the issues during jury selection and deliberating juries.
4. Describe, analyze and evaluate the issues confronting the individual as well as the system.
5. Identify and create solutions to issues we discuss in class and from our readings.
? My personal feelings related to jurors with mental illness are a question I would have to know. To what extent of mental illness are we talking about?

If per say they are minor depressed or bi-polar but are on medication that is effective there really should be no problem with them serving. On the other hand if they are severely manic depressive, severely bi-polar or schizophrenic or etc. then we may have a problem. My point is many people in America have symptoms of depression that can be classified as a mental disorder/ condition yet it is very common and normal whereas more severe symptoms are not common and are not normal. You get my point? It really depends on what level we are talking about when considering mental disorders. Just a thought as to where I stand on the topic.
This is basically a research paper on jurors who have been diagnosed with a mental illness who serve or attempt to serve on a jury. There are many different feelings regarding this issue. Describe the issues and how these jurors are at times perceived by society and all who are involved? How is society and moreover how is the defendant affected?
