Consultancy Project

1. Perform all of the following calculations. Then, use your results to compare the dispersions of the two glass samples.

  • A sample of dense flint glass is reported to have a refractive index of 1.746 using green light and 1.814 using blue light. Find the path taken by each ray when the light enters the glass at an angle of 20o with respect to a line perpendicular to the surface from an oil with a refractive index of 1.5400.

  • A sample of crown glass is reported to have refractive indices of 1.513 and 1.532 using green and blue light, respectively. Find the path taken by each ray under the conditions described above.

  • Which glass sample has greater dispersion? Explain, using your calculations above.

2. Find the amount of light reflected from the front surface of a piece of glass (r.i. 1.5600) in air. Then, find the amount of light reflected from the front surface of the same piece of glass in water (r.i. = 1.333).
