History

Answer the following in a clearly argued and well organized essay. Mainly base your analysis in the books: “The world that trade created” by Pomeranz and Topik, “The origins of the modern world” by Robert B. Marks , and “ The World in a very small place in Africa” by Donald R. Wright:

- Throughout history, has the driving force behind globalization been, put simply, violence? Or, would you agree with Adam Smith's quote that “the inborn human propensity to barter and truck [i,e., trade]” has also been the principle means by which globalization occurred.
- Which of the two views do you think most accurately reflect how globalization has occurred throughout history? Peaceful trade versus forced processes of globalization. Describe the relationship between violence and trade in the long-term history of globalization, and explain why.
