In the past two decades, many human services organizations have been recognized as social change organizations. Many organizations, such as feminist organizations, often use their client services in combination with advocacy to create social change. For example, some rape crisis centers look to create social change through eliminating tolerance of rape, empowering their clients, and advocating for legal, medical, health, and social services for their clients. As a human services professional, you have the ability to advocate for any group, regardless of whether or not you are a leader.

Autism

According to some lay groups, the nation is experiencing an autism epidemic—a rapid escalation in the prevalence of autism for unknown reasons. However, no sound scientific evidence indicates that the increasing number of diagnosed cases of autism arises from anything other than purposely broadened diagnostic criteria, coupled with deliberately greater public awareness and intentionally improved case finding.
Read the "Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism" article by Heyworth (2011) and write a two-page summary of the article explaining the reasons why the public perception regarding the prevalence of autism may stem from the use of vaccinations.

Multiple Perspectives

We have seen how changing the context of the story changes the meaning of the story. Let us look at another way to change the original story to expand our understanding of Cinderella’s family. We always hear the Cinderella story from the perspective of the Cinderella character. To highlight and acknowledge multiple perspectives within a family system, use the Cinderella Plot Summary and retell the original Cinderella story twice, from the perspective of two alternative family members. For example, you might tell the story once from the perspective of the stepmother and once from the perspective of the prince. Describe the values and beliefs each character might hold, which would explain how he or she acts in the story.
