Rawls sets himself the task of merging two different strains of Modern Liberal thinking, which had be considered incompatible (i.e., utilitarianism, and the social contract tradition).

1.a.  Explain why these two approaches were considered to be incompatible.

1.b.  Lay out Rawls’ method of merging the two, and what he argues are the benefits of doing so.

1.c.  Analyze whether you think Rawls is successful in his goal of providing a better theory of justice that is capable of addressing the problems of our society today.
