Coming to American-Poetry

Coming to America: The poems that we read by Phillis Wheatley and Langston Hughes are both concerned with African American roots and transitions, but they approach the topic in different ways. Focus on either Hughes’ “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” or Wheatley’s “On Being Brought from Africa to America,” and discuss what the author seems to be trying to say about the movement of his or her people from Africa to America. Remember to take into account elements such as tone, voice, and symbolism, and if necessary, do some background research into the poets’ biographies or the symbolism they use.
