In a 2-3 page paper choose a nursing policy or procedure that is commonly used on your unit (central line dressing change, hand washing, obtaining a lab specimen, pain management, wound care, etc.).

Locate the nursing policy and procedure and answer these questions:
◦How easy/difficult was it to find this procedure?
◦Did the RNs on your unit know where to find this?
◦Is the policy evidence-based?

Observe the RNs on the unit performing the chosen procedure. Describe what steps the nurses took.
◦Did the nurses deviate from policy?
◦What prompted the nurses to make those deviations?

Discuss why RNs may or may not follow the institutions’ written policies and procedures.
◦Reflect on the consequences of not following evidence-based practice guidelines.
◦What is the proper response when you as an RN discover unsafe practice that deviates from standards, policies, or procedures?
