Plato's republic

Description:
The first city created by Plato in Book II was based solely on economics. Plato believes that such a focus results in a city that is worthy of pigs.

Does your ideal city have any purpose other than to create a structure for economic growth?
-should society be able to impose moral values?
-should society be able to redistribute money-through taxation -for the benefit of all: roads, fire and police safety, schools?
-if you respond yes to the previous question--where do you draw the line for what is spent for the public good?

2. Plato puts forward a system of education that he believes will result in strong, capable individuals who will help the City thrive.

What do you think of his educational system? What kind of educational system would you suggest for your ideal City?

3. Plato argues that people should serve only one function in society.

What are the pros and cons of such an arrangement? Do you think such an approach would make for a better society?
