and discuss the unique (?) problem that Christianity posed for the Roman State. Follow and
analyze the relations between Christianity and the Roman State from Nero through Trajan to
Constantine, and discuss and compare in depth the persecutions under Nero, Decius, Valerianus,
and Diocletian & Galerius. How can we explain the back-and-forth between a policy of—either
partial or general—persecution and toleration?
