Vast Wasteland

In his first major speech after being appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by the newly elected President John F Kennedy, Newton Minow coined a phrase that was used by critics of American television's programming standards for years to come. The speech was made to the convention of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Washington DC on 9 May 1961.In addition to your chapter reading assignment, listen to and/or read the so-called "Vast Wasteland" speech.  (Clicking on the link will bring you to both a full transcription and an audio copy of the speech.)
