What is the meaning of “men” in the phrase “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence? What are your reasons for this interpretation?

Week 1 presents six readings that each represent a fundamental American value. Week 2 examines the intellectual history behind our approach to representative democracy, examining two famous alternative views of governance (Plato and Aristotle), as well as the ideas from Locke’s Second Treatise on Government that became the foundation of our American ideas on governance. We can see Locke’s influence directly in the Declaration of Independence. Week 3 examines closely the American Constitution’s system of checks and balances, a few of the Federalist essays written in the Constitution’s defense during ratification, and two contending theories of Supreme Court judicial review (originalism and the living document theory).

Compose an essay of at least 2000 words but no more than 3000 words (not including your references list) in which you discuss in depth the following questions:
(1) What is the meaning of “men” in the phrase “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence? What are your reasons for this interpretation?
(2) Since Jefferson was heavily influenced by Locke in writing the Declaration of Independence, why did he replace Locke’s term “Property” with “the Pursuit of Happiness” in the phrase “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”?
(3)  What is the political and intellectual relationship between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution?

Be sure to synthesize ideas from each as many of the Weeks 1-3 readings as possible. You may also bring in up to four additional sources you have found in your own research.
