Conservation of Linear Momentum

Answer all the questions on this answer sheet. Include sample calculations of the initial and final momenta, and energies from Part I, trial 2. Also, include a sample calculation for impulse for the first mass. In addition, show a sample calculation for %LlKE and %Llp from Part I, trial 2. Assuming Ov =0.01 m/s and% Om =5 %, estimate the uncertainty of the initial momentum (for the final momentum assume the same percent uncertainty as the one you calculated for the initial momentum). Compare your results with uncertainties to see if momentum was conserved.
Part I
1. Was momentum conserved? Explain.
2. Was kinetic energy conserved? Explain.
3. In trial 2 using uncertainty calculations determine if the momentum was conserved (assume% O'pi =% O'pf).
Part II
4. Was momentum conserved? Explain.
5. Was kinetic energy conserved? Explain.
6. Comparing the % change in kinetic energy to part I, what can you conclude?
Part III
7. What was the total momentum of the system before separation for each trial?
8. What was the total momentum of the system after separation for each trial?
9. Is kinetic energy shared according to the ratio of the masses as predicted by the theory? Explain (See Equation 8).
