Attached are the semester project questions for Daughter of Fortune.

These questions should be answered thoroughly and need to be at least one half page in length (they can certainly be longer).

There will be a severe penalty for late work.

Below are questions to be answered on the historical fiction novel, Daughter of Fortune, by Isabel Allende. Please make sure you read the novel in its entirety before answering these questions. Your answers should be thorough and at least one half page in length. This project is due on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 with a severe penalty for late work. Please contact the instructor if you have any questions at all.

1. One of the author’s main themes in this novel is “patriarchy”. There are many examples of this within this story. Give at least one example of patriarchy, supported with scenes in the book. Did the women usually get their way in the end? How?

2. In this novel, the author explores four cultures during the mid to late 19th century – Chinese, American, Chilean and English. Choose one of the cultures and give a brief summary of that culture’s characteristics.

3. According to the novel, what was the atmosphere in California beginning in 1848 with the Gold Rush? Give a few examples that she shares.


4. Eliza goes to California in search of Joaquin Andieta, but instead discovers freedom. Although survival was tough, why do you think she cherished her new found freedom so extensively? (Support your answer with examples)


5. Give a short history of Chile from the mid 1500’s to modern day. Include geographic, political and economic information.


6. Author Isabel Allende has a personal (and tragic) connection to Chile. Using credible outside sources, write a brief summary of this connection.
