Lightweight Concrete used in the construction of medium rise buildings

Title:

“Lightweight concrete used in the construction of medium rise buildings”

Aim:

The aim of this report is to discover and explore information on lightweight concrete as well as identify this materials suitability within the construction industry for structural applications.

The main goals that will be incorporated throughout this report are listed below:

1. Understand how lightweight concrete can be used as a construction material in medium rise buildings.
2. Understanding types of treatment process of lightweight concrete. When treating this material, it is important to consider the environmental impacts, costs and the best methods used.
3. Method of installation of lightweight concrete, including the design of the material and type of joints used (i.e. fixed joints, connections etc.).
4. Its applications in commercial, residential and industrial buildings.
5. Research different types of lightweight concrete that can be used for construction.
6. Lastly, to determine the suitability of lightweight concrete used in the construction industry. This may include; advantages, disadvantages, environmental impacts, structural load capacity, thermal properties, etc.

Objectives:

o To prepare an 80 – 120 page report on the above topic including references of relevant articles, books and internet sources.
o This project aims to provide a full report on the effectiveness of lightweight concrete products within the construction industry, (specifically medium rise construction buildings) and provide an understanding of its properties that make it useful for these applications.
o The report should include information like:
• History
• The manufacturing and production process
• The material properties
• The material composition (i.e. volume of air, additives, surfactants, concrete etc.)
• What makes the material lightweight?
• Different types of lightweight concrete and their properties and compositions
• Thermal properties and resistance
• Insulation properties
• Waterproofing requirements (if any)
• Special circumstances when applying the material
• Workability (i.e. is it easy to use?)
• Fire resistance
• Abrasion resistance
• Erosion resistance
• Earthquake resistance (if any)
• Load capacity per cubic metre i.e. strength
• Structural capacity
• Effectiveness
• Use in construction (i.e. flooring, load bearing and non-load bearing walls, beams, columns etc.)
• What is applied after lightweight concrete in construction (i.e. painting, rendering etc.), and why are they applied?

• Uses elsewhere
• Advantages
• Disadvantages
• Cases where the advantages/disadvantages were demonstrated
• Environmental impact
• Costs
• Price comparison between other construction materials that can substitute lightweight concrete.
• Embodied energy and costs
• Comparison between other types of concrete, lightweight substitutes and Supplementary Cementitous Materials (SCM)
• The maintenance required ( before and after application to buildings)
• The different methods and materials used to manufacture the product and which is most effective
• Lightweight concrete used in construction
• Utilizing other materials in construction
• Types of lightweight concrete
• Characteristics of lightweight concrete
• Why choose lightweight concrete?
• Treatment of lightweight concrete
• Comparison with regular reinforced concrete
• Methods of installation of lightweight concrete (i.e. fixed joints, connections etc.)
• Lightweight concrete types (e.g. blocks, panels, slurries, fibre-reinforced lightweight concrete, pre-stressed lightweight concrete, Autoclaved Aerated Concrete etc.) and their advantages/disadvantages over each other.
• New research and innovations that will improve the future use of lightweight concrete in construction.
• Improvements made to lightweight concrete which make it more versatile and suitable for its current applications

Requirements:

o More topics are expected to be included (other than the ones listed above) in appropriate heading and sub-heading format.
o This report will be submitted to an Australian university so information obtained on this product should come from Australian sources and manufacturers for example “Hebel blocks Pty Ltd”.
o The report should focus on the application of lightweight concrete in Australia and not other countries unless it is about its manufacturing and import/export operations for Australia.
o The report should include a summary of the history of the product and its uses in Australia.
o Any mention of numbers/calculations in units should be in the metric system, (e.g. t, kg, m, cm).
o The report should include an abstract and introduction.
o Report should include charts, diagrams, tables and other forms of visual aids which will help in improving the understanding of the report to the reader.
o The report should include opinionated statements and judgements in regards to the application of lightweight concrete in medium rise buildings from an engineering perspective (general thesis requirements) for example recommendations, alternatives etc.
o The reader should be able to establish that the report contains a lot of research on the topic and has been referenced well.
o The report should include appendices, tables and other information at the end, that relate to the body of the report (if necessary). For example; graphs, data, tables and booklets from companies and manufacturers.
o The report should include headings and sub-headings to separate components of the report.
o The report is not to be plagiarised from other related journal articles, academic resources, internet websites or any other person’s previous works.
o The report needs to be completed at a fourth year undergraduate level.
o This capstone report should predominately contain information and research, (i.e. 85% information and research, 15% appendices, bibliography, graphs, tables etc)
