Philosophy, History, Goals, and Functions of Probation

According to scholarly reflections, the origins of probation are somewhat hazy, but most agree that the so-called “father of probation” was John Augustus. Based on readings in your textbook and this week’s lesson, answer the following questions:
How have the philosophy and the system of granting probation changed from their beginning in 1841 to the present time?
What impact has the enforcement of criminal law had on determining who is subjected to probation and parole?
Why should we be concerned about probation and parole?
Some people simply say, “If you do the crime, do the time.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
